Our nervous system and endocrine system are made up of neuroendocrine cells, located throughout the body. They release hormones that communicate messages to certain cells that are able to receive these messages. Neuroendocrine cells are found throughout the body in areas such as the gastrointestinal tract and lungs, regulating air, blood flow through the lungs, and controlling the speed at which food is moved through the gastrointestinal tract. Like other types of cells, neuroendocrine cells can sometimes develop into cancer, and lead to serious medical conditions, including neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). In this program, we will explore how neuroendocrine tumors are developed, discovered and treated, using the latest research. We’ll also meet patients who live with this often dangerous condition, and discuss the importance of the doctor-patient relationship throughout this process. (3307)
